Journal 2 - "Join the Flock!" & "Enhance Your Twitter Experience"

Ferguson, H. (2010). Join the flock!. Learning & Leading with Technology, 37(8),
McClintock Miller, S. (2010). Enhance your twitter experience. Learning & Leading with Technology, 37(8),

These articles basically summed up the benefits of using Twitter as a professional learning network (PLN). In order to get the most out of Twitter you must be willing to dedicate the time to develop relations with other professionals using Twitter. After setting up your account you have to learn to follow those that are going to increase your professional portfolio. The more you put in the more you get out but you can also just watch and listen to those tweeting around you. Using a TweetDeck is helpful in stream lining your Twitter account and making it easier to use. You can also use HootSuite to connect multiple accounts together and it makes it easy to share book marks on those linked accounts. I personally find juggling multiple web sites and multiple emails accounts overwhelming.

Q1: How can Twitter be used by students in an educational capacity?

A1: I think Twitter can be used to share ideas and websites that students might find interesting regarding a subject they are learning. It could be a way for students to collaborate together and to learn from others. This however would have to be monitored by teachers pretty closely. Just in our own classroom we see how easy it is for someone to add the #422 and post something.

Q2: Should Twitter be used in schools for teachers to collaborate ideas?

A2: Twitter would be a wonderful resource for teachers to find and give information. Teachers would be using the same collaborative learning process that is used in the classroom. Instead of hunting for hours on lesson plans and topics, you can use Twitter to gain ideas from other teachers as well as contribute your own ideas. There can be discussions on what works and what doesn’t work as well as how lesson plans can be modified for different settings. The possibilities are endless.
